Simone's Baby Shower

Simone had her baby shower yesterday.  It turned out very well.  Thank you to everyone for the generous gifts.  We wish our family could have come!  We missed you.

Simone made almost everything.  She had cake pops, cupcakes, fruit tarts in chocolate molds, crostini, chocolate covered strawberries, chocolate cake, key lime pie, peanut butter cupcakes, macaroons and brie and crackers.  Her theme was "Paris."

Her games were Guess the Girth, Guess the Chocolate Poopy Diaper, and a card game that asked questions about the mom-to-be.

Full Moon Iron Mt. and Solitude

I did another full moon hike up Iron Mountain last night.  I'm really enjoying the night hikes, especially when there's not many people out.  As opposed to the HUNDREDS of people out at last month's full moon, I only counted about 20 people this time.  Last month's full moon fell on a weekend and it was all over the news as being the "closest and largest full moon of the year" so I think that had alot to do with the excessive crowds.

This hike was good because I was sorely in need of some solitude.  I've been grouchy lately!  I realized that I haven't hiked by myself in many months with all the meet-up group outings as well as friends and family camps and hikes.  Not many understand the deep-seated yearning for alone-time.  I don't understand it myself.  I just know I get very irritated when faced with too many social situations.  Am I genetically geared that way?  Did I learn this behavior?  Combination of both?  I've also noticed that I get very amped out and pissed off when an obstacle comes up that potentially delays my trail arrival time.  I forgot my headlamp so had to turn back around and go home to get it (10 minutes into the drive) so that started me steaming.  Then I had to get gas and that was irritating.  My anxiety reaches a crescendo with all these stupid little items that mean nothing.  Then when I get to the trailhead, a sigh of relief escapes and my demeanor becomes noticeably calmer.  When I start walking, I am filled with serenity and peace.  What's my diagnosis?  LOL.  I think Dennis can attest to this psychotic behavior.

The weather was just perfect for this hike.  76 degrees with a nice breeze.  The air smelled like summer- that humid desert, sage-filled scented air that I love so much down here.  The full moon was spectacular, as always.  I am mesmerized by the moon as it comes over the horizon, full and orange.  It never gets old.  I've decided my mission in life is to capture a decent picture of the full moon.  So far that goal has eluded me. I will probably need better camera equipment to do that.

I wore my clod-hoppin' clunky clown shoes.  They are my $10, size 10.5, ebay specials.  I felt like a ginormous amazon with them on.  I was obsessed with looking at other chick's feet for the first 30 minutes or so and thought everyone's feet looked so petite compared to mine.  They worked well though and my toes didn't get scrunched coming back down.

I saw an animal that I've never seen before also.  My co-worker, Rocksanne, has a wildlife biology degree, so I described it to her and she said it was a kangaroo rat.  I thought it was neat because of the long tail and tuft of fur at the end.  Here's a picture I found on the internet because the rodent was too speedy for me to get an actual picture:

I thought I wasn't going to take any pictures.  I was going to just enjoy the hike and not mess with the camera but I couldn't help myself and ended up taking a crap ton of pictures.  Enjoy!

Mt. San Jacinto update

I got a voicemail from the Mt. San Jacinto Ranger Station.  They said that the dates I am scheduled to be in the backcountry will not work because of the fire.  The fire is contained but they still plan to keep the wilderness closed during my August backpacking dates.  Someone is supposed to call me back to reschedule my permit dates for a later time.  So that's good at least.  I just don't know yet when those dates will be.

Fire Update

The Riverside County Sheriff in cooperation with Idyllwild Fire Protection
District has issued an evacuation notice for the Idyllwild and Fern Valley
area. This does not include Pine Cove, Mountain Center, and Poppet Flats.*

*This Evacuation notice also includes the San Jacinto State Park
Wilderness, Forest Service Wilderness and Forest Service Campgrounds.*

*Please read evacuation notice under the "Closures" tab.*

*Immediate Update - The Trails End Community at the very top of Morris
Ranch Road is under an immediate Evacuation Notice!*

*General Fire Info: *

The Mountain Fire started at 1:43 PM on July 15, 2013 near the junction of
Highway 243 and Highway 74. It is currently burning east of the Mountain
Center and Apple Canyon Areas. It is burning in very steep and rugged
terrain in the southern portion of the San Jacinto Wilderness along the
Desert Divide and in the Apple Canyon and Bonita Vista Areas.

Last night the fire settled down enough to allow fire crews to attack the
south flank of the fire directly. On the north flank, crews made
extraordinary effort building line in steep terrain toward South Peak. The
night shift did a great job last night.

The weather today remains hot and dry and the high level winds are coming
out of the east. This change in wind direction aloft will be demonstrated
by the top of smoke columns bending to the west. The most active parts of
the fire are near Red Tahquitz Peak above the community of Idyllwild and
near the community of Trails End to the south. These two areas will be the
focus of today's firefighting activities as both air and ground crews work
to slow the rate of spread of the fire. Structure protection contingency
plans are being updated in all evacuated communities. On the east side of
the fire, the fire continues to slowly back down the mountain as fuels
become more sparse at lower elevations.

The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway and Mount San Jacinto State Park are
currently closed because of unhealthy air quality due to smoke.

*Damage Assessment Update:*

**A damage assessment has been completed for the Bonita Vista, Pine Springs
and Zen Mountain Center Area.

Bonita Vista - 3 mobile homes and 3 residences were destroyed, 1 residence
sustained damage.

Pine Springs - 1 commercial building, a workshop, garage, and cabin were
destroyed.

Zen Mountain Center - No damages.

In addition to the above residences, there were a total of 11 outbuildings
and 4-6 vehicles destroyed.

It is important to note that while homes and buildings were destroyed or
damaged, firefighters were able to defend and save a larger number of homes.

*Campground and Trail Closures:*

**The Pacific Crest Trail is closed from Highway 74 north to Saddle
Junction. All of the trails connection to the Pacific Crest Trail are
closed as well, including South Ridge Trail, Carumba Trail, Spitler Peak
Trail, Fobes Trail, and Cedar Springs.

All Forest Service Campgrounds located along Highway 243 are closed, The
San Jacinto State Park is closed, and the San Jacinto Wilderness is closed.

Hurkey Creek County Camground, and all of the hiking and mountain biking
trails out of Hurkey creek and May Valley are closed.

*Road Closures and Evacuations:*

Highway 243 is under a soft closure from Banning South to Mountain Center;
Highway 74 is under a soft closure from the Cranston Fire Station near
Valle Vista east to the junction with Highway 371. A soft closure is in
place to allow residents access to gather items from their homes or
properties.

Idyllwild and Fern Valley is under an evacuation order.  Click link for
more information: http://inciweb.org/incident/article/3516/19215/

Mandatory evacuation orders are still in effect, for Bonita Vista, Pine

Mt. Woodson

Mt. Woodson hike was not that great.  I wasn't feeling well and was pretty grouchy.  Then Dennis got mad at me for being grouchy so we hiked in sullen silence for the first hour or so.  It was incredibly humid and there was a crap ton of people at the summit, waiting in line to get pictures for facebook or twitter or whatever at Potato Chip Rock.  That rock looks like it could snap off at any moment.

7.18 miles in 3 hours, 38 minutes and I was glad to be done.
